Gun safety must afford both defense and protection. Good gun technology should be about defense against criminals and protection from accidents. The herein described SAAMOâ„¢ technology provides both defense and protection, with an emphasis toward protecting young children.
SAAMOâ„¢ Safe Access Ammunition is a new class of patent pending gun safety technology that has recently come forth that is centered on ammunition rather than the gun. Several patent pending SAAMOâ„¢ derivatives are in development, one of which can save lives with some immediacy and is described below.
SAAMOâ„¢-SR (Safety Round), in simplest form, is an ammunition cartridge with the primer, bullet and gun powder removed and replaced with an electronics package containing a motion sensor, warning alert components and battery. This technology takes advantage of automatic magazine based guns that requires a certain amount of strength and mental capability to manually eject an ammunition cartridge. By this attribute most small children would find this ejection task impossible. Placing a SAAMOâ„¢-SR (Safety Round) in the chamber of such a gun can detect handling movement by curious young children while shielding them from the live rounds in a gun magazine. A gun safety device such as SAAMOâ„¢-SR would be analogous to placing a fence around a swimming pool with a splash warning device in the pool.
Any tampering would be motion sensed by the SAAMOâ„¢-SR electronics and result in a cell phone alert, flashing light and/or sound coming from the gun barrel. This would alert parents that tampering has taken place and gun safety precautions on their part is needed
What happens when the SAAMOâ„¢-SR equipped gun is needed for home defense? The gun is first brought to bear whereby the reusable SAAMOâ„¢-SR cartridge is manually ejected bringing live ammunition from the magazine into the gun chamber. The SAAMO-SRâ„¢ safety device has a delay that provides time for cartridge ejection and does not emit sounds or light after ejection. By this adult action the gun becomes a standard firearm for defense until the SAAMO-SRâ„¢ safety device is replaced in the gun chamber. In discussions with pro-gun experts SAAMOâ„¢-SR is considered a safety device and not a gun control device and was deemed interesting and acceptable.
The combination of ammunition and electronics miniaturization offers many technical possibilities such as voice chip technology that warns a gun tampering child of danger using a parent’s own voice or of an ejected SAAMO™-SR cartridge that radio links to a security system, cell phone or Wi-Fi warning of a home invasion or the presence of an unsafe gun.
Gun ownership can now be more assuredly considered. Concerned grandparents can now suggest a defensive gun to their children without undue fear for their grandchildren’s safety. Many claim that they and their children are gun savvy and gun safety is therefore under their control. What about neighbors and acquaintances where your children play and socialize. Each SAAMO™-SR equipped gun reduces the possibility of accident exposure especially from those not as gun savvy as we all like to think we are.
